One of the most varied albums I’ve ever heard. No two songs sound alike, so it’s hard to even say what genre it is. It has everything, from upbeat catchy pop to hip-hop to slow melancholy songs. The number of unique instruments in each song can never be counted on a single hand, which is quite impressive since there are only two members in the group. Your attention is held constantly thanks to the diverse styles from song to song; there’s even one entirely in Finnish! So far, this is The Dø’s only album, but I’m looking forward to anything they release in the future.

Monster X is seriously unlike anything I’ve ever heard. He combines wobbly dubstep basslines, clattering breaks, synth stabs and great samples in to a storming, monstrous, slimy mess. It’s absolutely chaotic and yet feels really composed to hit the spot perfectly. The sound is really thick and heavy. The EP is only around 20 minutes but it has some incredible replay value. I’m really not sure how to describe something like this, so I’ll let the music do the talking.

Skulltaste is an album by electronic hip-hop producer Mux Mool, released on Ghostly International, which you might know for their work with Adult Swim. The album has a very slick futuristic vibe, even though there are some chiptune-esque effects used, such as the “handclaps” in Wax Rose Saturday, one of the best tracks on the album. It uses a few voice samples, and instead of being repeated to the point of annoyance, they actually work very well. Definitely recommended. The version I have uploaded is of the web release, so it has a few bonus tracks. I usually don’t go for bonus tracks, but the ones on this album are definitely worth it, particularly NAFE.

No summary of mine could do this album justice. If it has to be categorised it would fall under electronic hip-hop, although it doesn’t sound like anything else you’ve heard in the genre. What makes it unique is its combination of analog fuzziness, its fairly minimalist choice of sounds and the nearly off-beat and unpredictable percussion that gives it a high replay value. The more you listen, the more you’ll be able to appreciate the depth and innovation. It was quite ahead of its time for 1999; some songs could be classified as dubstep (years before it became as popular as it is today), and it had an influence on many future artists such as Flying Lotus. Did I mention it has some of the lowest basslines you’ll ever hear?

Cycheouts Ghost are a team of two Japanese dudes who make some fucking awesome, grime-y jungle and breakcore. They’re amazingly consistent in their releases, but they keep their sound fresh and incorporate a lot of awesome sounds. Vikalpa is probably my favorite releases of theirs, largely because of two songs: “Kaos Future 2000″ (linked below) and “T.sus.” The first has a sick bassline layered underneath great samples, and the latter is very spacey and has a nice piano. Recommended.

Muzai Moratorium is the debut album by Shiina Ringo, who you may know as the vocalist of the group Tokyo Jihen. What separates this album from your average J-Pop is its wide variety of genres. There aren’t many types of music that aren’t included on the album in some form; it ranges from grunge to pop to jazz at points. She has a unique and easily recognisable voice that I love! I’ve listened to this far more than any other release of hers and I still don’t have a single complaint. Get it if you want something with high replay value or if you want to give a new type of music a shot.

What, I haven’t posted this yet? Spectacular drone/rhythmic noise type stuff; the guy toured with Nero’s Day At Disneyland. That, combined with the fact that “no synthesizers, samplers, sequencers, drum machines, computers, musical instruments or ulterior motives” were used should be enough to tell you it’s worth it. Made entirely with effects pedals and a mixer, Strange Gods is one of the best albums I’ve come across in a while. Incredibly innovative and surprisingly varied. It doesn’t seem like much when you first start it but a bunch of more pieces rise up over time and combine in to a conglomerate of jarring bliss.

Also, buy it! It’s only $10, plus the art is awesome.

I hope the cover, name and preview are enough to convince people to get this, because I really am not sure how to describe it. It’s like, extremely experimental hip-hoppy IDM with an occasional (and very pretty) female vocalist, but that’s not even close to how it sounds like. I don’t really like using the term, but “avant-garde” is all that I can really think of. All I really know is that they’re a group of people from Japan who’ve been active since 1999, going through some lineup changes and making some all-around quirky, fun, great music. It’s kind of poppy and mellow sometimes, mostly on tracks like (R.I.P) Tide and Pinky, and at other times really chaotic and energetic, à la 2 More Heads_Sprouted! or Saddam Fed Bird While Jailed. It’s really crazy, try it.
